Iconic Lambton Quay Building
restoration & Upgrade
CONSULTANTS:
Breathing new life to the Golden Mile in Wellingtons CBD, with the restoration and upgrading of a Wellington icon. Originally constructed in 1909, then redeveloped in 1985 to include two office towers, this building had been home to department store Kircaldie & Stains and then David Jones.
With empty building space post-pandemic, the property owner planned to carry out seismic resilience upgrades and reconfiguration works to better suit the market.
While the consultant team finalised documentation, Wilsons were able to commence site establishment, demolition works, designing of temporary works structures, and apply for applicable council permits.
Structural works involved:
Upgrading existing shear walls
Installing seating angles over three levels
Removing the escalators and lift and infilling slabs
Installing over 1km of structural steel drag plates on floor slabs
Installing over 25 tonnes of steel k frames and diaphragms
Other upgrade works included:
Removing and replacing all windows to the upper historic façade
Painting the historic façade
Installing new shop front entries at street level
Upgrading existing passive fire protection to the structure
Applying new membrane systems to level three carpark
Architectural works involved:
Dividing the ground floor into five retail spaces with new toilet and kitchen facilities
High-end fitouts for Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Exhibition Art Gallery
Base build works for AS Colour and HNRY tenancies
Work is continuing on this project with the following work due for completion late 2024:
Construction of a double height atrium
Luxury end of trip toilet and shower facilities
Construction of a new bike lock up
Café fit out
